Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem that remains a concern in Indonesia because it affects physical growth, cognitive development, productivity, and the quality of human resources. The incidence of stunting is influenced by various factors, including maternal nutritional status during pregnancy and a history of Low Birth Weight (LBW). This study aimed to determine the association between maternal nutritional status during pregnancy and a history of Low Birth Weight (LBW) with the incidence of stunting among children aged 24–59 months in Oetulu Village, the working area of Oeolo Public Health Center, in 2026. This was a quantitative study using an observational analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of all 68 children aged 24–59 months in Oetulu Village, with a sample of 41 children selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data on maternal nutritional status during pregnancy and LBW history were obtained from the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Handbook, while stunting data were obtained through height measurements based on the Height-for-Age (HAZ) index. Data were analyzed univariately using frequency distributions and percentages and bivariately using the Pearson Chi-Square test with a significance level of α = 0.05. The results showed that most mothers experienced Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) during pregnancy, most children had no history of LBW, and most children experienced stunting. The Pearson Chi-Square test showed no significant association between maternal nutritional status during pregnancy and stunting among children. In contrast, there was a significant association between a history of Low Birth Weight (LBW) and stunting among children. It was concluded that maternal nutritional status during pregnancy was not significantly associated with stunting among children aged 24–59 months in Oetulu Village, the working area of Oeolo Public Health Center, in 2026, whereas a history of Low Birth Weight (LBW) was significantly associated with stunting. Therefore, stunting prevention efforts should focus on preventing LBW through improving the quality of maternal health services, fulfilling nutritional needs during pregnancy, and continuously monitoring child growth
